Your cycle
Bicycle, tricycle, recumbent cycle, e-bike, cargo bike?
All types of cycle are welcome here! If you don't yet love yours, we hope you soon will :) Please come to Smile Cycling sessions with a roadworthy bike (i.e. tyres hard, brakes and gears working, chain intact, saddle stable, pedals going round) and with a well-fitting helmet in good condition. We will do a safety check of our bikes before we set off, but if your bike needs repairing, we'll probably have to postpone the session. If you're not sure your bike is roadworthy, please take it to a local repairer* to be checked before our session. *happy to recommend one or two local cycle repairers!
If you're interested in e-bikes but haven't yet purchased one, Smile Cycling can borrow one (and a helmet) for you to try out, if you are able to meet in Staveley (LA8), just north of Kendal. This is the home of Staveley Community e-Bikes, a fab e-bike rental service! Read more about what they do here.
What to bring and wear
Helmets
To ensure that you stay warm, dry and comfortable during your cycling session... Clothing should include a brightly coloured top, and shoes that fully cover your feet (so not sandals). Ideally clothing should not have long or loose bits that could get caught in the chain mechanism. Choose clothes that will be comfortable for moderate physical activity in the outdoor conditions on the day - check the weather forecast first! Having checked the forecast, bring (as applicable) waterproofs, sunglasses, sun cream and/or extra clothing. Reflective, hi-vis garments are strongly recommended for any session that takes place on a dark evening. It's advisable to eat and drink ahead of the session, and bring any drinks and snacks you'd like to have handy during the ride.
There are good reasons to wear a well-fitting helmet when you're cycling.
Most importantly, they help protect your head and brain in the event of a fall. In the UK it's not mandatory to wear one, but highly recommended. Your Smile Cycling instructor will be wearing a helmet, and we'd prefer it if you do too.
Anything else you'd like to know? Feel free to ask and we'll get right back to you :)
